چکیده

This study finds that the El Niño influences on the summer Great Plains low-level jet (GPLLJ) are different for the Central Pacific (CP) and Eastern Pacific (EP) types during their decaying phases. While the CP El Niño induces negative sea level pressure anomalies over the Gulf of Mexico to drive anomalous northerly winds weakening the GPLLJ, the EP El Niño intensifies theGPLLJ by inducing anomalous surface air temperature gradient between the northeastern and southwestern United States. The recent emerging CP El Niño can weaken the GPLLJ to lead to a drier environment in the central United States.

The Seasonality of the Great Plains Low-Level Jet and ENSO Relationship

The Caribbean and Great Plains low-level jets of the Intra-Americas Seas serve as an important source of moisture for adjacent land and oceanic regions. The Caribbean low-level jet (CLLJ) transports moisture from the tropical Atlantic into the IntraAmericas Seas, which is further transferred over to the continental United States by the Great Plains Low-Level Jet (GPLLJ). Thus, the GPLLJ acts as...

Dynamical connection between Great Plains low-level winds and variability of central Gulf States precipitation

The Great Plains low-level jet has been related to summer precipitation over the northern Great Plains and Midwest through its moisture transport and convergence at the jet exit area. Much less studied has been its negative relationship with precipitation over the southern Great Plains and the Gulf coastal area. This work shows that the southerly low-level winds at 30°–40°N over the southern Gr...

Inter-El Niño variability and its impact on the South American low-level jet east of the Andes during austral summer – two case studies

The impact of the maximum convection location over eastern and central Equatorial Pacific over the intensity and positioning of the South American Low-Level Jet east of the Andes (SALLJ) during the austral summer was investigated. The Bonner criteria 1 was applied to the NCEPNCAR circulation fields during the El Niño of 1997/1998 and 2002/2003 to identify the SALLJ episodes. The composites of t...

On the Role of Sloping Terrain in the Forcing of the Great Plains Low-Level Jet

The summertime Great Plains low-level jet (LLJ) has been the subject of numerous investigations during the past several decades. Characteristics of the LLJ include nighttime development of a pronounced wind maximum of typically 15–20 m s at levels 300–800 m above the surface and a clockwise rotation of the wind maximum during the course of the night. Maximum frequency of occurrence of the LLJ i...
